If you were here on wednesday you may have read about the Essex Waste Management Partnership’s unmasking of the seven bidders for their £2bn contract. The announcement of the Essex shortlist came just days after plans were approved by the Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government, John Denham, for a waste facility at Rivenhall, near Braintree.

The site will use technology to treat over 500,000 tonnes of household and commercial waste each year. The facilities will also include a pulp plant to make pulp from waste paper and all of the following:

- Anaerobic digestion plant

- Materials recycling facility

- Mechanical biological treatment facility

- De-inking and paper pulping facility

- Combined heat and power (CHP) plant

It’ll be called the Evolution of the Recycling and Composting Facility (eRCF) and after both a public inquiry and planning inspector gave the green light, it looks like the site is going to be a reality.
