Today’s topic: Arnold Schwarzenegger, well not really but it involves him. He was an actor who, in his most celebrated role, was responsible for a lot of destruction. But people change, heck even cybernetic organisms built to terminate can change as Arnie proved to us in the sequel. Now, he’s the Governor of California and has helped develop the State into one of the most environmentally active in the US of A.

The latest innovation to come out of the Golden State is in responsible waste management and has been initiated by Waste Management Inc, who run one of California’s major landfill sites. They’ve created over 100 wells across 240 acres of detritus and hooked them up to tubing that literally sucks methane out of the dump. The methane gas is then sent to an on-site facility that purifies and transforms it into liquefied natural gas.

This gas is then used to power garbage and recycling trucks instead of diesel which not only saves Waste Management Inc. some cash but also saves the ozone from needless Co2 and methane emissions. It’s a simple and very effective process that goes a long way towards showing just how resourceful we can be if we have the motivation.

Final Thought (nod to Springer): Interestingly, of the 1800 landfill sites in the US, 517 have an active energy project ongoing. This figure is up almost 50 percent from 10 years ago which goes to show that contrary to popular belief, there are agencies in the US that care about the future of the human race more than oil.
