It’s hotting up in the race to secure the Essex Waste Management Partnership PFI-funded contract. The EWMP revealed this week that seven companies are in the running for the £2 billion deal which would see up to 350,000 tonnes of waste a year treated at newly developed mechanical biological treatment facilities.

The seven hopefuls are:

- Biffa
- JB by Skanska Infrastructure Development and Cory Environmental
- Veolia ES Aurora
- VT Group
- United Utilities
- Urbaser SA
- Shanks Group

As well keeping rubbish out of landfill; the new facilities will also help to the waste management partnership to reach 60% recycling targets by 2020. As for the winner, the preferred bidder will be announced in October 2011 with an aim to have any new facilities up and running by the end of 2014.
